A quiet corner for the North-East tongue
Doric is the distinctive Scots dialect of North-East Scotland. Our Doric Neuk preserves and celebrates it through books, recordings and shared stories.
What is the Doric Neuk?
“Neuk” is itself a Doric word meaning corner or nook. Within the museum we've set aside a reading corner stocked with books, poetry and recordings in the Doric tongue — the traditional Scots dialect spoken across Aberdeenshire and the North-East. It's a place to sit, browse and hear the words of the district as they have been spoken for generations.
We regularly host storytelling afternoons through the Heritage Hub where local speakers share Doric stories, poems and phrases handed down through Turriff and district families.
